Senate Bill 1332: Diagnostic and Therapeutic Radiologic Technology Schools 

SB 1332 (Statues of 2010, chapter 525) was enacted and became effective on September 29, 2010. Pursuant to Health and Safety Code section 107046(f), CDPH-Radiologic Health Branch (RHB), effective March 3, 2011, adopted the standards specified in Health and Safety Code section 107046(a).  Those standards are as follows:

1. “Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiologic Sciences,” revised in 2001 and as published by the Joint Review Committee on Education in Radiologic Technology (JRCERT).
2. “Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiography,” adopted April 2010 by JRCERT.
3. “Standards for an Accredited Educational Program in Radiation Therapy,” adopted April 2010 by JRCERT.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ):

Q   With the adoption of SB 1332, are Diagnostic Radiologic Technology and Radiation Therapy schools still required to adhere to Title 17, California Code of Regulations (17 CCR) standards with regards to curriculum, including experiments?

A   If you are a Joint Review Committee on Education for Radiologic Technologists (JRCERT) accredited school, you do not need to follow the 17 CCR, sections 30421 or 30422 requirements.

If you are not a JRCERT accredited school, you are still required to follow 17 CCR, sections 30421 or 30422 requirements, as applicable.

Q   Can schools assign students to clinical sites once the site has been approved by JRCERT?

A    No.  The California Department of Public Health, Radiologic Health Branch (RHB) is still the governing body; so clinical sites are required to be approved by RHB before any students are assigned to a clinical site.

Q    Are schools required to provide a copy of the Radiation Machine Tube Registration certificate?

A    RHB does not require schools to provide a copy of the Radiation Machine Tube Registration certificate.  We only require the correct state registration number, which can be found on the Radiation Machine Tube Registration certificate, for that site.  JRCERT may require additional documentation.

Q   Does SB 1332 apply to Fluoroscopy schools?

A   SB 1332 only applies to Diagnostic Radiologic Technology and Radiation Therapy schools.
