Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) Survey
MO-10-0038 BFP
Maternity Practices in Infant Nutrition and Care (mPINC) is a national survey of maternity care practices and policies that is conducted by the CDC every 2 years. The survey is mailed to all facilities with registered maternity beds in the United States and Territories. Below are links to the mPINC survey instrument and scoring explanation. For more information about the mPINC Survey visit www.cdc.gov/mpinc.
Results from the 2007 and 2009 mPINC surveys indicate that despite slight improvements, birth facilities in most states are not providing maternity care that is fully supportive of breastfeeding
California mPINC Survey Data
The CDC shared aggregate state-level data with state health departments to facilitate their work with hospitals and birth centers in improving breastfeeding care. State Reports summarize each state’s strengths in breastfeeding support as well as the areas in need of improvement and the percent of facilities that provided ideal responses to each survey item. In addition, these reports identify opportunities that states can take on in order to better protect, promote, and support breastfeeding mothers and infants.
California Local mPINC Survey Data, 2009
The California Department of Public Health, Maternal, Child and Adolescent Health Division, developed mPINC Benchmark Reports for counties with at least 5 facilities participating in the mPINC Survey and each of the Regional Perinatal Programs of California (RPPC). These benchmark reports were created to provide RPPC coordinators and other breastfeeding stakeholders with local data to facilitate their work with hospitals in improving breastfeeding care. These reports summarize each county’s (or RPPC’s) overall composite (total mPINC) score, as well as sub-scale scores for each of the seven mPINC dimensions of care (labor and delivery care, feeding of breastfed infants, breastfeeding assistance, contact between mother and infant, facility discharge care, staff training, and structural/organizational aspects of care delivery) in comparison to State scores. In addition, the percent of facilities that provided the ideal response to each survey item is reported for each county (or RPPC).
