Laboratory ScientistOutdoor Air Quality Section, EHLB

The Department of Public Health, Environmental Health Laboratory's Outdoor Air Quality Program (OAQ) conducts applied research, develops innovative analytical methods, and performs complex laboratory analysis to investigate sources of human exposure to airborne toxicants in the outdoor environment.

Services OAQ provides

  • consultation and applied laboratory research for the Center for  in cooperation with other center branches to assess human exposure to gas and particle phase toxicants;
  • technology transfer working group to explore, develop, and evaluate innovative real-time and time-integrated sample collection techniques for human exposure assessment in both emergency and non-emergency events;
  • new methods development and advanced analytical support to measure toxic chemicals in outdoor air samples under contract to the California Air Resources Board (CARB) Research Division;
  • a technical working group to provide on-line recommendations for the rapid evaluation and characterization of toxic air releases;
  • quality control services under contract to the California Occupational Safety and Health Agency (Cal-OSHA) to ensure the accuracy of workplace testing.

Certifications

OAQ maintains certification from the American Industrial Hygiene Association (AIHA) to conduct VOC, metals, silica, and asbestos analysis in air samples, asbestos in bulk material samples, and certification from the U. S. Environmental Protection Agency for asbestos fiber analysis in drinking water by transmission electron microscopy.
