Welcome to the State of California 

California Department of Public Health General Preventive Medicine/Public Health Residency is based in the state public health department and is strongly associated with the state's professional organization for local health officers.  It is uniquely positioned to give physicians a solid and broad-ranging exposure to the structure and function of public sector health agencies in California.  The residency program was founded in 1980 and is fully accredited by the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME).

Mission

The overall mission of the California Department of Public Health General Preventive Medicine/Public Health Residency is to develop public health physicians who can provide strong leadership in California local and state public health agencies, effectively applying the existing and continually evolving science base of public health and preventive medicine. 

Goals

  • Train physicians in the scientific basis and approach of public health and population-based preventive medicine
  • Train physicians in public health assessment
  • Train  physicians in policy development
  • Train physicians in public health assurance
  • Train physicians in necessary administrative skills, including the management of human and fiscal resources, the planning, development, and evaluation of public health programs, and the development of health policies targeting disease prevention and risk factor reduction in large populations
