Local Food and Nutrition Education Channel Request for Application FFY 2011
The California Department of Public Health (CDPH), Network for a Healthy California (Network) is releasing the Local Food and Nutrition Education (LFNE) Request for Application (RFA) 2011 on December 7, 2010. The Network is pleased to announce this funding opportunity for non-profit, community-based organizations who wish to implement innovative nutrition education interventions and promote access to healthy food on behalf of Californians who are eligible for CalFresh: California's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). The term of the LFNE contracts will be October 1, 2011 to September 30, 2014. A total of $850,000 is available each year at an annual maximum award of $85,000 per contractor.
Proposed LFNE nutrition education projects should address needs that are currently unmet, and have the potential to be replicated by other entities working in similar settings. The applicants are asked to address three primary objectives:
- Provide and implement innovative nutrition education activities in organizational settings that address and support anti-hunger, food justice, economic development, community-supported agriculture, and cooperative education models;
- Provide other Network-funded projects with promising practices regarding nutrition education and food stamp promotion in the context of anti-poverty efforts by providing technical assistance and community leadership to Network-funded projects, and;
- Facilitate program development via the Local Food and Nutrition Education Action Committee to enhance nutrition education interventions and the sustainability of promising practices.

The funding for the LFNE projects is made possible by the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) through an interagency agreement with the Department of Social Services and is part of the State Plan for CalFresh: California's Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - Education Plan (SNAP-Ed). Funding for the LFNE projects is contingent on the continued availability of funds through the USDA SNAP-Ed.
