Circle Charts and Cards

Two Education Aids to Help Staff Start the Dialogue

1. Circle Charts

Circle charts display several health-related topics relevant to the participant’s specific category. Each circle includes a photograph representing a topic.  The staff person asks the participant to briefly look over these circles, usually no more than 6, and then asks her/him to choose one of them as the focus of their dialogue. A circle with “Another Health or Nutrition Topic" is included for participants who have a topic or concern different from the topic offered.

The content on the back of each circle chart may include suggestions for opening and closing questions, relevant facts, handouts, and other tips or reminders.

    2. Cards

Cards have the same topics and content as the circle charts, but in a different format.  Cards are usually the size of a playing card or larger.  Each card includes a photograph representing a topic.  The staff person asks the participant to briefly look through the cards, usually no more than 6, and then asks her/him to choose one of them as the focus of their dialogue. A card with “Another Health or Nutrition Topic" is included for participants who have a topic or concern different from the cards offered. Staff may limit the choice of topics offered to a participant by removing cards from the stack. Cards are not as commonly used as circle charts.
