  • Affirm, Add and Move On (Word)Opens in a new browser windowLearner-centered classes are based on getting participants involved and talking. Teachers sometimes worry that participants might contradict them or say things that make them feel the class is getting out of control. The "Affirm, Add, and Move On" technique can help keep classes on track when participants offer "incorrect" information or possibly misleading comments.

  • Rolling with Resistance (PDF)Opens in a new browser windowOne of the harder things we do in WIC is to try to counsel participants who don't want to listen to us, or seem to have negative attitudes. "Rolling with Resistance" is an approach, consistent with Motivational Interviewing, which may help in these situations. This in-service aims to introduce staff to the concept of Rolling with Resistance and give them a chance to practice this approach.
  • Teacher Safety "What To Do if You Don’t Know" (Word)Opens in a new browser window In learner-centered education we encourage participants to ask questions. Many teachers fear getting questions that they do not know the answers to. This module will help WIC teachers practice two ways to deal with these kinds of questions - "Affirm, Admit, and Resolve", and "Bounce Back". It also explores when to use to use each of these technique.
