California Pedestrian Safety (PedSafe) Program

Building a healthier California is the primary mission of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH).  In California today we know that approximately 19 percent of traffic fatalities are pedestrian related.  That is approximately 58 percent more than the national average.  However, while this percentage may seem extraordinary, California is working diligently to reduce the number of individuals injured or killed in pedestrian collisions.

Goals and Activities

Public health strives to improve healthy lifestyles through walkable communities and increased physical activity.  PedSafe aims to create environments where these activities can happen safely by implementing a multi-faceted approach of education, media outreach and messaging, technical assistance, and training and facilitation.  PedSafe projects include:

  • Promotion and distribution of the It’s Up to All of Us (IUAU) and WalkSmartCA public education campaigns.

  • Distribution and training for the Action Response Kit, a tool that illustrates seven steps for responding locally to a pedestrian collision, with an emphasis on techniques and resources related to community mobilization.

  • Distribution and training for the workbook, Communication for Pedestrian Safety: Risk, Response and Change an educational manual with tools, templates and organizational concepts for a broad audience of those working in pedestrian safety. The focus is on promoting risk communication practices and norm change strategies.

  • Leadership for the statewide Pedestrian Injury Prevention Action Team Program.

  • Facilitation of the statewide pedestrian safety advisory committee, CalPED.

  • Participation and leadership for Strategic Highway Safety Plan, Challenge Area 8.11.

  • Participation with the Department of Motor Vehicles in the implementation of the Culture Change Workgroup.

  • On-going technical assistance to advocacy groups, local partners, and others regarding pedestrian safety.
