Radon Services Certification

You must be on our certified list in order to provide professional radon measurement or mitigation services in California. Learn how to become certified below:

For Testers and Laboratories:

  1. Complete an approved training program. 
  2. Obtain certification by either one of the two certifying boards.
  3. Submit a "Radon Certification Verification Form" along with a copy of your certificate to the Indoor Radon Program.  There are no Indoor Radon Program registration fees.

For Mitigators: 

  1. Must be a California contractor with at least one of the following licenses: B, C20, C36 or D64; a requirement of the California Department of Consumer Affairs, Contractors State License Board (CSLB).
  2. Complete an approved training program.
  3. Obtain certification by either one of the two certifying boards.
  4. Submit a "Radon Certification Verification Form" along with a copy of your certificate to the Indoor Radon Program. Include your valid Contractor's license number on the form. There are no Indoor Radon Program registration fees.

Training Programs and Board Certification

There are many programs that offer training acceptable to both the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) and the National Radon Safety Board (NRSB).  If you are looking at a particular training program contact either of the certifying boards to confirm the acceptability of that program.  It is not the responsibility of the department to accept or reject a particular training program.

Radon Certification Verification Form

Once certified by either NRPP or NRSB, complete the Radon Certification Verification Form (PDF) and e-mail, fax or mail the form along with a copy of the certificate, to the Indoor Radon Program, see contact information listed on the last page of the form.  

California Health and Safety Code

California Health and Safety Code Section 106750 - 106795 (PDF) states:
(a) Except as provided in Section 106790, no person may provide radon services for the general public, or represent or advertise that he or she may provide radon services unless that person meets both of the following requirements:
    (1) Successfully completes the National Radon Measurement Proficiency Program of the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board Certified Radon Professional Program.
    (2) Submits to the department a copy of certificate demonstrating successful completion of either program.

(b) Persons certified to provide radon services shall successfully complete and submit to the department proof of completion of the National Radon Measurement Proficiency Program of the National Radon Proficiency Program (NRPP) or the National Radon Safety Board Certified Radon Professional Program every two years after initial certification.

(c) A copy of the current certificate of completion shall be submitted to the department at least 14 days prior to conducting radon services within the state.
