​Newborn Screening Electronic Data Exchange

​The California Newborn Screening (NBS) Program offers birth providers the option to order NBS tests and receive NBS test results electronically via Health Level Seven (HL7) messages. In addition to supporting the vision of the CalHHS Data Exchange Framework (DxF), electronic NBS orders and results contribute many benefits to birth providers, newborns, and families, including the following:

• Streamlined test request workflows
• Expedited receipt of NBS test results
• Reduction of manual data entry of orders and results
• Increased traceability of NBS test orders and results
• Direct integration with provider organization's electronic health record (EHR) or laboratory information system (LIS)
• Enhanced data quality through discrete data transmission
• Improved security through direct electronic integration

The NBS Program is actively onboarding birth providers for electronic data exchange. To initiate the onboarding process at your facility, email the NBS health information exchange (HIE) inbox at nbshie@cdph.ca.gov. Onboarding will be provided on a "first-come, first-served" basis.
