Antimicrobial Stewardship

CDPH Spread Awareness, Stpp Resistance.

Approximately 30% of antibiotics prescribed in U.S. acute care hospitals are either unnecessary or suboptimal. Subsequent studies show this may be higher in certain settings including:

79% of patients with community-acquired pneumonia (due to excessive duration)
77% of patients with urinary tract infections (due to lack of documentation of signs and symptoms of infection)

Physicians, nurses, pharmacists, and laboratory staff can work together to improve antimicrobial use (AU) through effective antimicrobial stewardship (AS) programs (ASPs).
ASPs improve patient outcomes and reduce adverse consequences, including antimicrobial resistance (AR) and Clostridioides difficile infections.
