HEALTHCARE-ASSOCIATED INFECTIONS (HAI) PROGRAM

California Hospitā€‹ā€‹al HAI Interactive Reportā€‹

Healthcare-associated infections (HAIs) are infections that patients develop during the course of receiving health care. HAIs are the most common complication of hospital care, occurring in approximately one in every thirty-one patients! California acute care hospitals track and report to CDPH five types of HAIs:

CDPH reports CLABSI, MRSA BSI, CDI and SSI incidence using the standardized infection ratio (SIR), a comparative measure calculated by comparing the number of HAIs reported by the hospital with the number of HAIs predicted using 2015 national baseline data. The predicted number of infections is determined by a risk adjustment process that accounts for differences in hospital and patient characteristics.

ā€‹Healthcare-Associated Infection Incidence in California Hospitals, 2017-2023ā€‹ā€‹

In 2023, the statewide SIRs for CLABSI, MRSA BSI, CDI and SSI were all significantly lower or better than 2015 national baselines. Following substantial increases in 2020, statewide SIRs for CLABSI and MRSA BSI decreased between 2022 and 2023, although the 2023 CLABSI SIR remained higher than in 2019.ā€‹
