CAIR Software Releases Notes

This page communicates the major new features and changes in the California Immunization Registry.

About the Releases

These releases incorporate the correction of some minor defects discovered during the CAIR Implementation contract period and minor enhancements to the California Immunization Registry software.

March 12, 2025 Release 2.8.24

User Interface and Data Exchange

1. Updated PCV13 Adult Schedule

a. Added PCV21 as an acceptable vaccine

b. Updated recommendation to 50 years

2. Added PCV13 PPSV23 Adult Schedule

a. Added recommendation of 50 years

b. Added min age to validate of 19 years

If a patient receives PPSV23 as a second dose before age 65, dose 3 is required to complete series.

3. Updated Bexsero Schedule

a. Updated recommendation interval from 28D to 6M

For high-risk patients, CAIR2 will validate doses entered but the recommendation table will follow ACIP recommendation.

4. Frequent logouts mid-session in CAIR2

a. Issue with unexpected logouts mid-session is fixed. Users should not experience unexpected logouts while navigating through CAIR2 application.

February 13, 2025 Release 2.8.23

User Interface

Updated new CDPH branding in CAIR2. Added new footer with CDPH branding and updated header banner and left sidebar colors.
“Current Dose” displayed in the Edit Vaccine Inventory Information screen. When vaccines in CAIR inventory have a dose amount stored that is not a valid value, the Select Dose will display blank. The “Current Dose” will display the amount that was last recorded for the vaccine. Once the Select Dose is updated, the same value will display in Select Dose and Current Dose.
Fixed bug within the Org Extract report. The fixes will allow users to download the outbound files.

User Interface and Data Exchange

Removed vaccines with NOS from the Trade Name dropdown on the Enter New Immunization screen. These vaccines will be available on the Add Historical Immunizations screen.

Tradenames moved to Historical Imms only: Tdap > 7 years, NOS, MenC, NOS and OPV Polio Oral, NOS.

Updated PCV21 Schedule (One dose series)

Set recommendation age to 50 years.
Update minimum age allowed to 19 years.

PCV15, PCV21 and PPSV23 Adult series updated recommendation to 50 years.

2. Updated Dose Amount values

In the Add Vaccine Inventory Information and Edit Vaccine Inventory Information screen, the Dose Amount list has been updated and will only display the following dose amounts:

3. Added column on the Edit Vaccine Inventory Information screen to display the user role of the person updating the CAIR Inventory.

User Interface

“Activate Expired” button on the Enter New Immunization screen fixed.

Under the Add New Immunization screen, users could add immunizations using expired vaccines from their inventory. The “Activate Expired” button will display expired vaccines in the Tradename dropdown.

User Interface

PPSV23 issue in children under 5-years-old

Issue found in patients who received the Pneumococcal 23 (PPSV23) vaccine as a first dose in PCV series and received the MMR (combo) vaccine. The MMR combo vaccine prevents the PCV immunization from displaying on patients’ records. The fix will allow all doses to display correctly on patients’ records.

Data Exchange

For VXU messages: Updated the RXA-6 and RXA-7.1 field validation in CAIR2.

RXA-6 (Dose Amount) and RXA-7.1 (Unit of Measure) values sent in an HL7 VXU message will be accepted and stored in the CAIR database tables if the fields meet CAIR validation rules.

RXA-6 will be required for all given immunizations (RXA-9.1 equals “00”). When the RXA-6 field is null, “0” (zero), or contains alpha characters and the RXA-9.1= “00,” a warning ACK will be returned to the message submitter. The RXA segment will be accepted, but the dose amount will default to “Full Dose" in CAIR (value = ‘1’ being the default dose number).

The following values will be accepted in RXA-7.1 of the VXU: mL (e.g. milliliter), mg (e.g. milligram), and mcg (e.g. microgram). If RXA-7.1 contains any value other than the three values listed above, the unit of measure will default to ‘mL.’ The field is not case sensitive.

Added End Dates to COVID NDCs.

For User Interface, any vaccines from inventory with the following NDCs will display as “Not Valid” and the Explanation of Status will indicate “Dose was given after NDC end date” when immunizations are recorded after End Date.

For Data Exchange, when users select the NDCs listed below, immunizations recorded after the End Date will display as “Not Valid” and the Explanation of Status will indicate “Dose was given after NDC end date.”

The following fixes appear in this release:

Data Exchange

Fixed issue identified where Shot Giver names were not being saved to a dose administered and submitted through Data Exchange. This was due to the presence of special characters in the applicable fields when submitted through Data Exchange. The issue contributed to incomplete data on the patient record and the Dose Administered Report. Special characters will be allowed Via DX as they are through the User Interface.
Add new Non-US NOS Fractional Inactivated Polio vaccine (fIPV) CVX Code 324 to CAIR. These doses can only be entered as Historical and will not appear in the Trade Name dropdown options.

Removed the mm values in the Panel-A-nil and Panel B-nil dropdown options for TB T-Spot Test results.
Fixed Reminder Recall Report error when using “Use Vaccine Groups Selected.” An error was reported when a user would select 12 vaccines groups to run the report.
Fixed Dose Administered Report to display the 317 Funding under Funding Source and Patient Eligibility columns. After updating CAIR to include the Bridge Funding, these columns displayed blank.

Trade Name CYFENDUS attached to CVX 24 CPT 90581 and Vaccine ID 3 need to be cross walked to Anthrax CVX 24 CPT 90581 and Vaccine ID 3 if the date of administration is < 9/19/2023.
New CVX Code 318 updated to be assigned to Trade Name CYFENDUS, Vaccine Group Anthrax 03, Vaccine Name Anthrax post-exposure prophylaxis, CVX Code 318, and CPT Code 90581 
CYFENDUS NDC’s are 71665-0001-01  - 5 mL in 1 VIAL, MULTI-DOSE and 71665-0001-02 - 10 VIAL, MULTI-DOSE in 1 CARTON. CVX code updated to 318 
All IMMs prior to 9/19/2023 with CYFENDUS as vaccine given updated to be assigned Anthrax CVX 24.
Disassociated trade name CYFENDUS from CVX 24 and associate the trade name to CVX 318.
For CYFENDUS CVX 24 IMMs with the Date of administration
9/19/2023, with NDCs assigned, belonging to CYFENDUS CVX 318 reassign the IMMs to CYFENDUS CVX 318.

Add Unspecified Anthrax Vaccine CVX Code 319.

All anthrax CVX codes are associated with vaccine group ANTHRAX.
The following CVX code needs to be added as the NOS for the Anthrax vaccine group.

Add Anthrax vaccine, unspecified to CAIR2 as specified below.

Note that unspecified codes are added with a status of “Inactive.”

Note: Code will not appear on any Trade Name lists and when adding it through the UI user should add it using the Add Historical option and it should be added on the “Add Historical” date grid.

User Interface

Update to the Immunizations Needed/Routing Slip. Updated the Immunizations Needed/Routing Slip Report to display the patient’s first and last name and be in correct order when the field contains 2 or more values. All of names will now display in the field they belong. The new name order, First Name, Middle Name, Last Name.
Add Note to Historical Combination Doses. Added a note in red regarding historical combination shots that notifies the user when entering a combination vaccine, it is only necessary to enter a date for one of the antigens. When the Add Details button is clicked and a trade name is selected, the dates will auto-populate for the remaining antigens in the combination.
Changes to Inventory Lot Modification Feature. Relocation the red messages from the bottom of the screens to the top. Changes will appear as follows:

Edit Vaccine Inventory Information “Inventory was updated successfully.”
Edit Vaccine Inventory Information “Inventory was inserted successfully.”
Edit Vaccine Inventory Information “Lot already exists with the same Funding Source, inventory has not been added.”
Manage Inventory “Inventory was updated successfully.”

Listed the Modification History regardless of whether a Reason Note was added or not, with the most recent 20 modifications listed automatically and a link for the user to click to view an additional 20 modifications.

The note list displays by most recent date descending and displays details with or without notes.
The navigation option at the bottom of the screen brings up the next modification.

Reaction Hyperlink Regular User vs. Power user Roles. Updated the Reaction Red Yes hyperlink to work for Power users as it does for Regular users.

Data Exchange

Update RXA-17 Substance Manufacturer Name (CE) 01131 field to display CE data type where |manufacturer code^manufacturer name^MVX| displays.

Update RSP for protected clients. RSP returned for patients that do not agree to share, the value returned in QAK-2 was ‘NF,’ meaning Patient Not Found. The value now returned in QAK-2 of the RSP on a protected record will equal ‘PD’ for Protected Data.

RSP increment PID-1 when multiple patients are returned. Update the code in the RSP process to increment the PID-1 by 1 each time a new result is created. Multiple results of the client records will be numbered sequentially.

Added CVX Code 198 Non-US Pentalvalent

Update Vaccine id 801 DTP-Hib-HepB to replaced CVX 102 with 198.
Update all instances of immunizations, and lots with CVX 102 to be 198.
Add CVX 198 to crosswalk list of non-US vaccines that reject RXA if sent to CAIR as administered vaccine, RXA-9 historical indicator =00.

User Interface

The comment field in the patient information screen has been fixed. The up and down buttons can now be used to view multiple comments associated with the patient.
Added Non-US COVID vaccines COVIDECIA and COMIRNATY. They can only be entered as Historical doses.

Data Exchange

Modified Data Exchange processing to only override the patient’s address when the incoming immunization has a vaccination date more recent than the patient’s existing immunizations.
Modifications to the VXU inbound process to no longer set the lock flag on a client that is marked as deceased in the inbound file. Currently the UI does not lock patient records when the client is set to deceased. This change makes the process the same for Data Exchange (DX) and the User Interface (UI).
Fix to VXU’s being sent for COVID vaccines not updating with new CVX code.
Added Gamunex-C as a new trade name for the IG vaccine group as well as the NDC code and manufacturer Grifols (GRF)
Added Privigen as a new trade name for the IG vaccine group as well as the NDC code and manufacturer CSL Behring (CSL)

User Interface

Added new formulation 1.5 to Vaccine Inventory. It is now included in the dropdown list for entering NDC codes as well as adding or editing vaccine inventory.

2. New Features

Changes to the Dose Administered Report

Added Administered By column to be populated by the name of the Clinician administering the vaccine
Update the Excel spreadsheet to 2 sheets,

First sheet to display the Doses Administered Summary
Second sheer to display the Doses Administered Details.

Changes to the Excel file format allows column manipulation as with the standard excel format.
