¿Qué es la fiebre del Valle?

La fiebre del Valle (también conocida como coccidioidomicosis o “cocci”) es una enfermedad ocasionada por el hongo que vive en el suelo y la tierra en ciertas áreas de California y el sudoeste de los Estados Unidos. Las personas y los animales pueden enfermarse cuando respiran el polvo que contiene el hongo de la fiebre del Valle. El hongo generalmente infecta los pulmones y puede causar síntomas respiratorios tales como tos, fiebre, dolor en el pecho o cansancio.

El hongo de la fiebre del Valle crece en la tierra y el suelo (pero es demasiado pequeño para ser visible); Cuando el suelo y el polvo se remueven debido a la presencia de vientos fuertes o a trabajos de excavación, las esporas del hongo empieza a circular por el aire; Las personas y animales respiran las esporas del hongo que están presentes en el aire; El hongo suele afectar los pulmones, pero puede propagarse a otros órganos del cuerpo

En California, la cantidad de casos reportados de fiebre del Valle ha aumentado significativamente en los últimos años. De hecho, los casos de fiebre del Valle se han triplicado de 2014 a 2018.
