STD Control Branch Advisorship Program​

The Advisorship Program is a live online 8-week standardized training course lead by trained and experienced CDPH STDCB Disease Intervention Specialist (DIS) Advisors. Advisors lead participants in small-group active learning to build knowledge and skills in DIS subject matter. Upon completion, participants receive a certificate of completion.

Advisorship Program Objectives

  • Enhance understanding of syphilis and case investigations

  • Standardize disease investigation best practices

  • Learn resources and strategies for case prioritization and record searches

  • Incorporate technology when conducting partner notification

  • Improve communication skills by to reach clients respectfully and successfully

  • Understand STI and HIV prevention methods (PrEP, PEP, and vaccinations) to introduce options to clients

  • Develop interpersonal connections with peers and STDCB Advisors through case reviews and group activities​

​Frequently Asked Questions

What are the prerequisites for the Advisorship Program? 

Participants must have CalREDIE access and complete pre-requisite virtual asynchronous trainings prior to beginning the Advisorship Program. All pre-requisite training materials will be sent out once an application form is completed.​

What topics will be covered in the program?​

Syphilis reactor processing, record searches and syphilis summary reports, case documentation, contacting medical offices for information and provider detailing,, communicating with patients, interview skills (pre-interview analysis, cluster interviews, phone interviews, motivational interviewing, practice interviews), HIV PrEP and PEP, doxy-PEP and PrEP, mpox vaccination and investigation, partner Services, field preparation (safety, problem solving, best practices), CalCONNECT, CalREDIE, concepts behind quality assurance and quality improvement, case reviews and more!

How do I enroll?

Send a request to the stdcb.advisorship@cdph.ca.gov inbox. You will receive a follow up e-mail with the application form.​

Is this a self-paced program?

No. Participants will be assigned to a small group cohort that will meet twice weekly for 8 consecutive weeks (synchronous).​

How does scheduling work?

Cohorts will meet for 2-hour sessions twice a week, generally on Tuesdays and Thursdays (4 total hours per week). Start and end dates for the program will vary--e-mail stdcb.advisorship@cdph.ca.gov for enrollment and up-to-date scheduling.​

Is this Advisorship Program free?

Yes. The Advisorship Program is provided by CDPH STDCB at no cost to participants or local health jurisdictions.​

Will a certificate of completion be provided?

Yes. A certificate of for motivational interviewing and a certification of completion will be awarded to all peers who complete Advisorship requirements.

Pre-Requisite Trainings

Participants should view the following prior to the first Advisorship meeting:​

Passport to Partner Services Trainings (Required)

A CDC Train account must be created to access the following pre-requisite trainings:​

  1. Unit 1-Infectious Disease and Human Anatomy (4 hours)

  2. Unit 2-Syphilis (4 hours)

  3. Unit 4-Gonorrhea (4 hours)

  4. Unit 6-HIV Infection and AIDS (4 hours)

  5. Communication Skills (6 hours)

  6. Referrals and Linkage to Care (1 hour)

  7. Introduction to Partner Services for Partner Services Providers (4 hours)

  8. Field Investigation and Notification (12 hours)

CalRED​IE (Required)
