CalREDIE Core Components
CalREDIE is a system of integrated modules, with a secure web-based surveillance and reporting application as the foundation. CDPH implemented these modules over time, and continues to modify, enhance, and expand this system to improve the efficiency of communicable disease surveillance activities in California.
Core CalREDIE
The core CalREDIE application is a shared, centralized database that allows public health staff to securely collect data, investigate cases and contacts of public health significance, and manage outbreaks. The system allows for the secure sharing of data between state and local staff, and between local health partners, on an as-needed basis.
Electronic Laboratory Reporting (ELR)
Public health disease surveillance relies on Electronic Lab Reporting (ELR), which allows laboratories to comply with state reporting regulations, by securely transmitting standardized electronic lab test results to public health via HL7 messaging. The lab test results are rapidly available to public health staff in CalREDIE. Implementation of ELR has replaced manual printing, faxing, and data entry of lab results.
ELR started in October 2013 when facilities in the first Cohort transitioned form the User Acceptance Testing (UAT) into the CalREDIE Production environment. Since then, 15 Cohorts have successfully transitioned submitters from UAT to Production, and currently, over 350 laboratories submit reportable data to public health through CalREDIE.
Provider Portal (PP)
Healthcare providers can also meet state reporting regulations, by using the Provider Portal (PP) to report Confidential Morbidity Reports (CMRs) to the LHDs. CMRs received via the PP are available in real-time by local health staff for investigation and follow-up.
PP implementation started in September 2010 with the recruitment of providers in few LHDs. Today, there are approximately 3,000 providers from over 40 LHDs reporting into CalREDIE. Recruitment and continued expansion of the PP is ongoing.
Data Warehouse (DW) & Data Distribution Portal (DDP)
The Data Warehouse (DW) and the Data Distribution Portal (DDP), a web-based report and export module, were implemented as part of CalREDIE in April 2013. CalREDIE state and local users can access the DW using the DDP module to access data and reports in an easy-to-use format.
ARNOLD
Advanced Results Notification and Online Delivery (ARNOLD) is the alerting and notification module available to all state and local CalREDIE users. This tool was implemented in 2011, and it provides users automated email notifications based on certain data changes that occur within CalREDIE.
Electronic Case Reporting (eCR)
Electronic Case Reporting (eCR) will allow for the electronic generation and transmission of reports of potential cases of reportable conditions from the electronic health record (EHR) to relevant state and local public health authorities for review and action. This effort will eventually replace traditional paper-based methods of communicable disease reporting for many reportable conditions in jurisdictions using CalREDIE. The specifications and processes of the eCR are still under development, and further details on how to engage with CalREDIE eCR will be made available in late 2017.
