23-15 Assembly Bill (AB) 1756 (Chapter 478, Statutes of 2023), Remote Marriage License Issuance and Solemnization (Update to ACL 21-17)
11/29/2023

ā€‹This All County Letter (ACL) serves as an update to ACL 21-17: Assembly Bill 583; Remote Marriage License Issuance and Solemnization

ā€‹On October 7, 2021, AB 583 passed with an urgency clause, amending Family Code (FC) sections 359 and 501 and adding new FC sections 550-562 to allow a county clerk to issue a marriage license and/or solemnize or witness a marriage ceremony, using remote technology. This bill included a sunset date of January 1, 2024, for FC sections 550-560.

Effective January 1, 2024, section 21 of omnibus bill AB 1756 will repeal FC 562, permanently removing the sunset date for remote marriage license issuance and/or solemnization. With the sunset date repealed, remote technology remains an option for counties who choose to utilize this method to issue a marriage license and/or solemnize or witness a marriage.

For more detailed information on remote marriages, please refer to ACL 21-17.
