Imperial County Antibiotic Stewardship Collaborative

Overview
Together with the Imperial County Public Health Department, the HAI Program convened an antibiotic stewardship collaborative in Imperial County to promote appropriate prescribing across the continuum of care. Participating clinics received an onsite infection prevention and antibiotic stewardship assessment by an HAI Program Liaison Infection Preventionist, committed to a facility-specific action plan, and engaged staff at quarterly in-person learning sessions.

Goals and Objectives

  • Improve antimicrobial use and infection prevention measures within local healthcare facilities across the continuum of care
  • Form and strengthen partnerships with local and binational public health partners

Participating Facilities and Organizations

  • 2 hospitals
  • 4 skilled nursing facilities
  • 36 outpatient clinics
  • Imperial County Public Health Department

Outcomes

  • Developed region-specific materials for healthcare providers and patients, including provider antibiotic stewardship commitment posters
  • Formed and strengthened partnerships with the CDPH Office of Binational Border Health located in neighboring county to help continue efforts in the region
  • Developed a collaborative-specific webpage for collaborative participants to access meeting presentations and shared resources 
  • Provided a Train the Trainer session to promote ongoing educational offerings for frontline healthcare providers in local healthcare facilities
