Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch

The Chronic Disease Surveillance and Research Branch (CDSRB) is committed to serving the public by collecting statewide data about cancer, Parkinson's disease, and chronic disease risk factors; making chronic disease surveillance data available to public health practitioners and qualified researchers; conducting chronic disease surveillance; and communicating surveillance results to the public. In addition, the Branch provides leadership for, and coordination of, California's statewide comprehensive cancer control efforts based on the concept that people and organizations working together to identify problems and develop solutions will lead to better use of limited resources and generation of new resources through new partnerships. CDSRB implements these activities by directing, managing, and monitoring the state-mandated Ken Maddy California Cancer Registry (CCR), California’s Comprehensive Cancer Control Program (CCCP), the Richard Paul Hemann California Parkinson’s Disease Registry (CPDR), the California Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (CBRFSS), and the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry (CNDR).

Alzheimer's Disease Reporting

Neurodegenerative Disease Data Providers,

California Health and Safety Code (HSC) Section 103871 requires all hospitals, facilities physicians and surgeons, or other health care providers diagnosing or pro viding treatment for a patient with a neurodegenerative disease such as Alzheimer's disease to report each case to the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry (CNDR) starting July 1, 2025. CNDR has made reporting relatively easy for data providers and have also developed a California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry Guide to Reporting for your reference.

Please read the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry Guide to Reporting to become familiar with how CNDR collects neurodegenerative disease information, the information that is required to report, required to report if available, and the reporting deadlines.

Your Facilities Can Now Report Alzheimer’s Disease Cases

If you are interested in reporting Alzheimer’s Disease case encounters, you can start voluntarily reporting to the California Neurodegenerative Disease Registry (CNDR).

Legislation Updates

On October 13, 2023, Governor Newsom signed Senate Bill (SB) 344 into law (SB 344 Chaptered), authored by the California Legislature. This legislation makes amendments to the Health and Safety Code § 103885 and will go into effect on January 1, 2024.

Assembly Bill (AB) 424, was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom on October 8, 2023. AB 424 amends Health and Safety Code (HSC) 103871. One of the changes is that HSC 103871 section (b) was amended by adding the following words, “…include, but not be limited to, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis also known as Lou Gehrig's disease.” Click the link to access the Chaptered version of AB 424.
