ā€‹ā€‹ā€‹DEMOGRAPHIC REPORT ON HEALTH AND MENTAL HEALTH EQUITY IN CALIFORNIAā€‹

Background

The Office of Health Equity produces the biannual demographic report on health and mental health inequities for the state legislature and the people of California. Since August 2015 with the inaugural Portrait of Promiseā€‹, this report has been continuously updated to provide background and evidence into the factors in society that can positively and negatively influence health, which are known as the social determinants of health. Through these social determinants of health, we document the various health and mental health disparities that are created by underlying social, economic, geographic, political and physical environmental factors that affect the health of the diverse communities of California.

Updated Demographic Reportā€‹

The most recent report, Demographic Report on Health and Mental Health Equity in California (2023)ā€‹, uses updated data through October 2021. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, this report was delayed due to reassignment of staff to respond during the state of emergency. With the COVID-19 pandemic and the tragic death of George Floyd by a police officer in Minneapolis, this report includes a special prologue highlighting the inequities of the pandemic and racial injustice, including an additional section on police violence within California communities. Since the previous update, this report features new sections on the following: adverse childhood experiences, crowded housing, healthy neighborhood environments, and the silent epidemic of violence against American Indian and Alaska Native women.ā€‹
