Health Equity: Beyond the Numbers

ā€‹ā€‹About the Series

Health Equity: Beyond the Numbers is a new series of data briefs from the researchers in the Health Equity Research and Statistics Section (HERSS) for the Office of Health Equity. We present analyses grounded in both data and narrative, by incorporating other research, policy analyses, history, orā€‹ lived experiences. The data briefs are designed to be informative to the public, health equity researchers, government agencies, and policymakers to promote the health and mental health of all Californians.

Justice Involvement, Part 1: Adults who were ever Arrested or Booked (Issue #1, May 2024ā€‹ā€‹) [PDF]ā€‹ , is the first part of a special data series on Justice Involvement. Using estimates from the California Health Intervieā€‹w Survey (CHIS), nearly ā€‹1 in 9 California adults have ever been arrested or booked with noted disparities existing by race and ethnicity, age, sex, sexual orientation, federal poverty level, urbanicity, and educational-level.

California Department of Public Health funded questions for the CHIS (2021 ā€“ 2022 cycle) asking selected households about their experience in either themselves directly being or someone in their household being arrested or booked for breaking the law.
